Basic Radio Usage Guide

Before You Transmit

  1. Listen first - Check if the channel is clear before transmitting
  2. Think before you speak - Plan your message to keep it brief
  3. Press PTT (Push-To-Talk) - Wait 1 second before speaking
  4. Hold radio 2-3 inches from mouth - Speak clearly and at normal volume
  5. Release PTT when done - Listen for response

Basic Radio Protocol

  • Keep messages brief - Radio is for quick coordination, not conversation
  • Use callsigns - "[Recipient], this is [Your callsign]"
  • Wait for acknowledgment - Confirm message received with "Copy" or "Roger"
  • Avoid sensitive info - PMR446 is NOT encrypted, anyone can listen
  • Use standard prowords - See Doctrine for full list
